Mexican state prosecutor may face drug trafficking charges in NYC

Another high-profile Mexican drug-trafficking defendant could be coming to Brooklyn federal court.

Edgar Veytia, a Mexican attorney general for the state of Nayarit, has been arrested on an indictment that was unsealed in Brooklyn Federal Court. Another Mexican drug trafficking case is pending in Brooklyn against infamous drug lord Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzman.

According to the indictment, Veytia — with aliases including Diablo — was involved in trafficking operations that ran from January 2013 to February 2017.

He was arrested Monday in San Diego and was being held in California.

Veytia was arraigned Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, according to the FBI in San Diego. The FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and Department of Homeland Security built the case against him.
